Overview

The Faculty of Science is pleased to offer examination scanning to ease adoption of Gradescope for instructors in Science.  By eliminating the burden of scanning exams, it is anticipated that instructors will be more likely to take advantage of the convenience and pedagogical benefits of online grading.

The Science Examination Scanning service was launched with support from the Efficiency and Innovation Fund.  The Faculty of Science is grateful to the University for its support.

Starting February 10, 2020, instructors can drop off barcoded exams to the Science Help Desk in WSC 140 where they will be scanned and securely returned electronically via the OWL Drop Box.

Please note that exams must be barcoded by the Exam Preflight Tool to be eligible for scanning.

Please review the following summary of the Science Examination Scanning process to ensure a smooth workflow.

Before the Exam

  • Typeset your exam as usual, leaving a minimum of 1" in the top margin
  • Upload your exam to the Exam Preflight Tool
    • Any materials not barcoded by the Preflight Tool will be returned unscanned
  • Within minutes, you will receive an email notifying you that your exam has been barcoded and is available for download from OWL
  • Download the file and print your exams
  • If you have students writing accommodated exams with Examination Services, be sure to provide Examination Services with sufficient barcoded copies of the exam and advise them that the exams must be printed and not photocopied

During the Exam

  • Please instruct your students not to deface or tamper with the barcodes on each page in any way
